Fortunetelling is an occupation done by various techniques resulting
from wondering the unknown. In every society, people have interested in this field and have strived to know the future by using different methods. Some has done this by benefiting from soil, some from living creatures and some from fortunetelling arrows. However, the common ground of all was to know the future. Since the beginning of the humanity, people have always been curious about the “afterwards” part and the “mysterious one”. In order to make the unknown known, people have been using every possible kind of techniques. In addition, the fortunetellers awarded of a degree of honor, because it was not suitable for everyone, who lives in the present time, to inform others about their future. This required talent, experience and accumulation of knowledge. Therefore, the fortunetellers were valuable people who were the cream of the societies. Fortunetelling is a deep-rooted tradition. In parallel with this fact, we tried to trace the fortune and fortunetelling among the Jahiliyyah Arabs in this study. We touched upon the kinds of fortunetelling among Arabs after discussing briefly the history of fortunetelling. We explained the common types of fortunetelling among the Jahiliyyah Arabs known as ezlam, firâset, iyafet, kitfe, turuk, remil. Finally, we have dealt with that whether the relationship of the mentioned types of fortunetelling to some beliefs or not and that why Arabs used fortunetelling and the effects of it on the social and daily life.
